Fatigue, distress, illness perceptions, and cognitive and behavioral reactions to fatigue were assessed online by 174 adult kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) in a cross-sectional research study. Data encompassing both sociodemographic aspects and health conditions were also collected. An astounding 632% of KTRs suffered from clinically significant fatigue. Sociodemographic and clinical factors explained 161% of the variation in fatigue severity and 312% of the variation in fatigue impairment. The impact of reducing PPI use for these patients is poorly understood due to the limited research conducted on this subject. The research question addressed in this study was the suitability of PPI use in older adults, as evaluated through implementation of a PPI deprescribing algorithm within a geriatric ambulatory care clinic. A single-center geriatric ambulatory practice evaluated the utilization of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in patients before and after the introduction of a deprescribing algorithm. Patients who were 65 years of age or older and had a PPI listed on their home medication were all part of the participant cohort. The pharmacist's creation of the PPI deprescribing algorithm was informed by components of the published guideline. Our primary outcome measured the proportion of patients using PPIs for a potentially unsuitable purpose, both before and after the introduction of this deprescribing algorithm. At the outset of treatment, 228 patients utilized a PPI; alarmingly, 645% (n=147) of these patients were treated for potentially inappropriate conditions. Out of the 228 patients studied, 147 were part of the primary analysis group. The cross-sectional, retrospective study reviewed administrative records of 11,827 patients admitted to 19 acute care units at University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, from July to December 2019. Data from the StuPA implementation evaluation survey, conducted in April 2019, was also incorporated into this investigation.
